چکیده
A XMM-Newton observation is presented of the accretion driven millisecond X-ray pulsar SAX J1808.4–3658 during its 2000 outburst. The source was conclusively detected, albeit at a level of only ∼ 2 × 10 erg s. The source spectrum could be fitted with a power-law model (with a photon index of ∼2.2), a neutron star atmosphere model (with a temperature of ∼0.2 keV), or with a combination of a thermal (either a black-body or an atmosphere model) and a power-law component. During a XMM-Newton observation taken approximately one year later, the source was in quiescence and its luminosity was a factor of ∼4 lower and the source spectrum during the 2000 outburst was softer than its quiescent spectrum. The obtained results are discussed in the context of the 2000 outburst of SAX J1808.4–3658 and the quiescent properties of the source. Subject headings: accretion, accretion disks — stars: individual (SAX J1808.4–3658) — stars: neutron

We report on the highly variable and erratic long-term X-ray luminosity behavior of the only known accretion-driven millisecond X-ray pulsar SAX J1808.4–3658 during its 2000 outburst, as observed with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) satellite. The maximum observed luminosity is ∼ 2.5 × 10 ergs s (3–25 keV; for a distance of 2.5 kpc), which is approximately a factor of ten lower than that...

Received ; accepted – 2 – ABSTRACT Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray data reveal that the supersoft X-ray binary CAL 83 exhibits 38.4 minute pulsations at some epochs. These X-ray variations are similar to those found in some novae and are likely to be caused by nonradial pulsations the white dwarf. This is the first detection of pulsations in a persistent supersoft source.
متن کاملSAXJ 1808 . 4 - 3658 : high resolution spectroscopy and decrease of pulsed fraction at low energies
XMM-Newton observed the accreting millisecond pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658 during its 2008 outburst. We present timing and spectral analyses of this observation, in particular the first pulse profile study below 2 keV, and the high-resolution spectral analysis of this source during the outburst. Combined spectral and pulse profile analyses suggest the presence of a strong unpulsed source below 2 keV...

XMM-Newton, with its high throughput and excellent spatial and spectral resolution, is an ideal instrument for spectro-imaging observations of clusters. Presented here is an XMM-Newton mosaic observation of A2163, from which a new radial temperature profile is derived. The issue of background subtraction is addressed in some detail as a proper treatment of the background is essential for the de...
